Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chinese herbal medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine has a pharmacopoeia of over 5,000 plant, mineral, and animal substances. These herbs affect the Qi and promote healing in the body’s systems. Most herbalists work with 200-300 herbs. The herbs are combined into formulas, many of which have been in use for thousands of years, and produce few or no side effects. Herbal prescriptions can be in raw, powder, or pill form. Herbalists are trained to work with Western doctors and to take into account any Western pharmaceutical drugs patients may be taking while they are being treated with Chinese herbs.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is based on the belief that when Qi flows evenly and smoothly through the body’s meridians (energy pathways linked to specific organ systems), health exists. When the flow of Qi is blocked or disrupted, disharmony or illness appears. A practitioner inserts ultra-thin, pre-sterilized, disposable needles into points along the body’s meridians to affect the flow of Qi in various ways depending on the condition of the patient. The patient relaxes—or may even nap—as the needles help the body restore the smooth flow of Qi.

What can I expect on my first visit?

Your first visit lasts about two hours. After you have filled out the necessary paperwork your practitioner takes a very extensive medical history and does a physical exam. The practitioner puts all of this information together to make a diagnosis, identifying the pattern of disharmony involved. She will then explain the treatment and give you an idea of the treatment plan. She will introduce you to the acupuncture needles and give you a treatment and recommendations on how you can work together to restore health and balance.
